Patriots... 16-0 my take....

Well... after all this talk it finally happened... The New England Patriots did what many thought could never be done and finished with a perfect regular season and a job well done to them. But let me pose this question to most of you out there. Aside from those outside the bubble of New England, how unlikable is this New England Patriots team. Just watching the game this evening on the NFL Network made me realize how fans all over the place just hate this team. And here are some things that to quote my Buddy Peter Griffin are just grinding my gears.

Now.... do I think Tom Brady is a great great quarterback... Yes.... Maybe the best ever... Time will only tell... But some of the guys on this team are just big big jerks.... And like Mr. LaDanian Tomlinson said it starts with the Head Coach. Bill Belichick has made a mockery of the National Football League... whether its cheating which they did do.... running up the score which they did do!.... and lets face it they have some guys on their team that are impossible to root for.... Belichick being a very poor loser not shaking hands and showing class like a real man does.... And let us not forget how poorly he has treated protege Eric Mangini. Mr Randy Moss... I mean a guy who does not TRY at ALL in Oakland doesn't even run routes hard and then all of a sudden decides to TRY.... I mean maybe I missed the memo.... but you know in the NFL the idea is to try hard all the time it is your job... I thought that was what NFL wide receivers did but... I guess not...

And then The BUMS in the secondary whether its Rodney Harrison who is one of the most classless guys in the NFL... Not only did he ruin the career of Trent Green in St Louis by hitting him unnecessarily in a pre season game but has a history for being the dirtiest player in the NFL... and lets not forget he used steroids....

And last but not least Mr Ellis Hobbs... Just Shut Up... I mean you stink... you cant cover... and... just shut your mouth....

So thats it... I along with the rest of America applaud the Patriots for going 16-0... but we don't like you.... In fact we hate you......

Mitchell Report: MurrDogg's Take

Hey guys, I haven't talked with any of the BoxScore crew about this, but with the Mitchell Report being released in just over an hour, I felt like I needed a forum to input my feelings on what will most likely go down as the most controversial day in baseball history.

For those of you who don't know, Former Senator and current Boston Red Sox director George Mitchell has been investigating MLB and the steroid and HGH use that has tarnished the last decade or so of great baseball. Mitchell has used information from multiple sources, including clubhouse attendants and shipping/delivery receipts to compile the McCarthy-esque report. I could go on and on about the report and its background, but I'd rather get to my thoughts, and spare everyone the bore of reading what they've read countless times already.

Buster Olney has stated that for those people listed in the Mitchell Report, their reputation could be severely hurt or damaged forever. For some athletes whose reputation is already tarnished (Barry Bonds), this report is almost meaningless, but for those athletes who have appeared to be incredible role models for years and years, the athletes whose batting stances, swaggers, etc. were mimicked by countless little leaguers, the report might go beyond hurting their reputation, but also damaging the innocence of young children.
Recent sources have identified Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte as names in the Mitchell Report. Lets forget about Roger Clemens because frankly, I don't care for him and fully expected him to be on the list, but Andy Pettitte, a religious man who has served as a role model for young Yankee fans, this could be absolutely damaging to his reputation. Yes, he might have an easier time being forgiven because of his reputation off the field, but regardless, this will still tarnish his career.
During the playoffs this year, Paul Byrd announced that he had used HGH in order to help fight a disease he had struggled with. I highly doubt Mitchell's report will include the exact reasons why people used HGH or steroids, but I believe that the public must take the accusations with a grain of salt. Just like Paul Byrd, there is a good chance that some of the players listed might have used HGH for reasons other than getting bigger and improving athletic performance. In a competitive league like MLB, it is important for players to stay on the field and out of the trainer's room in order to make a paycheck. When a player suffers a setback caused by a bad injury, it can be assumed that the athlete and team doctors would do anything in their power to get the athlete back onto the field as fast as possible. HGH was not banned from baseball until 2005, making it safe to say that it was often prescribed to athletes before that time, and given its probable success, it can be assumed that team doctors might have continued to prescribe it after the ban (note that HGH cannot be tested for, making it difficult to trace). Yes, I realize that even those earning minimum salary in MLB are making a good amount of money, but making a few hundred-thousand dollars a year doesn't look so good if you struggle to stay in the league for more than a few years. Many of these athletes might struggle to find success maintaining a job in the corporate world, as they have dedicated their lives to their trade, some forgoing college and others leaving lives behind in foreign countries. Think now of the pressure to make a large paycheck in MLB, and you might understand why these guys would want to do whatever they can to stay in the league.
Personally, I do not want to see any names on the Mitchell Report. Yes, I am a diehard Red Sox fan, but I would prefer not to see names on the Yankees just as much as I would prefer not to see names from my beloved Sox. Disregard steroids and baseball is in a great place right now. Young players are emerging as future Hall of Famers, records are being broken, and the Boston Red Sox have won two World Series titles in four years, after an 86 year drought (had to throw it in there). MLB needs to realize that it is not helping its reputation by releasing Mitchell's report, regardless of what Bud Selig believes. Selig did a great job in getting a strong steroid policy in baseball (arguably the strongest in all of sports), but by releasing the Mitchell Report, it is as if he has no confidence in it. Stick to the testing, create even heftier suspensions if necessary, and let the problems weed themselves out. For all you fans out there, be true fans, and support those whose lives are about to be changed (most likely for the worse).

That is all I really have to say. Also, Brian and I WILL be back for shows after January 14th. As each of us move closer to graduation, our lives are getting more and more hectic, and we are finding less time to do shows. Fortunately, we have arranged our schedules for next semester so that we can put away some time to do a show every week or so. We will be back in mid-January with a basketball show. Hello all! Hope you are all recovering from the misery that is the 7th World Series Championship for the Boston Red Sox. I am starting to get anxious for the remainder of this NFL Season and all of the other fall activities that are coming at us. The Crew will be back with weekly talk shows every Friday that I promise you will be coming at you real soon. You will have the opportunity to meet two of our new staff members Aneesh Saxeena and Erik Elken. Erik, Aneesh and myself also will be working on weekly broadcasts of NFL Sunday and Monday Night Football Games and will be providing our analysis as well. Stay tuned to all of this good stuff... I decided that in my free time off this break that I was going to blog whats on my mind for the rest of the week, and there has been quite a bit to discuss. I want to say that I am outraged that the Syracuse Orange Mens Basketball team failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. One of the many blunders committed this year by Gary Waters and the Committee. How a team goes 22-12 overall, 10-6 in the Big East and coming off a huge win vs. Georgetown who was riding a big winning streak and went on to win the Big East Tournament is beyond me. To say that the decision boggled the mind that teams such as Arkansas, Stanford and Xaiver got in, is an understatement. Stanford went 18-12 and lost in the first round of their Pac-10 Tournament, Arkansas went 7-9 in the PUTRID SEC WEST and the A-10 was not worthy of getting two teams in the tournament. And don't forget Illinois or Purdue, Purdue beat nobody on the road, nor did Illinois what big wins do either of those programs have? The bottom line is that Syracuse did get screwed out of making the tournament. However they were not alone, Drexel had every right to be in the field of 65. Wins at Syracuse, Villanova and Creighton plus a solid record warrants a bid. The fact that the Committee took Old Dominion over Drexel because of its better Conference Record, but yet decided not to take Syracuse over Villanova and Marquette when it finished with a better Conference Record contradicts itself. The Committee was just not consistent on what constitutes a bid and what did not, it was a terrible job. I wont even bother mentioning the seedings which were a big time joke as well.

Never the less... although my enthusiasm isn't what it was a few days ago, it is the NCAA Tournament a great time of the year and I'll find a way to get into all of the games, and my bracket will be up Thursday at noon for all of you to see. Until then I am going inside practice of the Petrides Panthers High School Program and giving you a season preview from a point of view that only a former player can. Be sure to check out that tonight.............

Scheduling Update

Hey everybody - just wanted to let you know that we were unable to get a show up before our spring break because of scheduling conflicts with midterm papers and traveling. We will therefore combine our pitchers and infielders segments for fantasy baseball, and will have to discuss the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. We will be back one week from Wednesday.

The DH Argument

What would you say if David Stern held a press conference stating that starting in the 2006-07 season the Western Conference was going to abolish the 3 point line. It was started as an experiment and he feels that it has run its due course. So now when two teams from different conferences meet, the home team’s league rules take precedence. What would you have if he did this? Anger? Confusion? Major League Baseball?

Playing with two different sets of rules for one league is ridiculous. Baseball was able to get away with it in the 70’s and 80’s because there was no interleague play and the only time the DH came into the equation was the World Series (not like its that important to have a uniform set of rules for your championship series or anything). Now that each team plays 16 games a year against the opposing league this rule difference comes into play an astounding amount. There was a time in which Major League pitchers were some of the most athletic people on the field. Babe Ruth started as a pitcher, and many other pitchers would hit in the middle of their respective orders. Alas, these days have been replaced with a league based around specialization in roles. Pitchers are now looked upon as almost an automatic out. The old guard mentality needs to be changed so that the game can progress with a higher level of play. That high level can be reached by forcing the National League to adopt the designated hitter.
In 1973, in an effort to combat both declining attendance and offense, the AL adopted a rule stating that a team could designate a hitter to bat for the pitcher. When they did this most people thought it was just a stunt which would be used for a few years and then let things go back to the way they had always been. Maybe that was the plan of the owners and commissioner, but you know what happened? It worked. Simply put the DH has been an unquestionable success. It has worked on so many levels that it is now firmly entrenched in the AL and baseball in general.

First, and most obviously it makes for the higher scoring games that fans enjoy. It gives managers more roster flexibility, both during games and in selecting their team. It has been in use for 33 years, there is an entire generation of fans who grew up with nothing but the DH, it has permeated every level of baseball front the Majors, minors, college, high school, and most youth leagues. The most important reason, however, is that the game is just better with a DH. You remove your worse offensive player for someone who is most likely one of your best. It also allows you to put a great hitter in the lineup without sacrificing defense (a la David Ortiz and Frank Thomas) so in turn it improves the quality of the offense, and your defense. Why don’t we want to see the best players play when we watch a Major League game? We go there expecting to see the best hitters and pitchers in the world, and then we are subjected to watching Pedro Martinez fail miserably trying to hit mediocre pitching.
As for the dissidents? They say that the NL is a more exciting game to watch because runs are so hard to come by and there is more strategy. Well the runs are hard to come by because you have a gaping hole as 1/9th of your offense. As for strategy, and the double switch being exciting? You tell me what you’d rather see, Willie Randolph pinch hitting Julio Franco for Chad Bradford and then substituting Billy Wagner into Carlos Delgado’s spot in the order so he can pitch the ninth, or David Ortiz hitting his 5th walk off home run of the season.
Yes, baseball is a game of tradition, and the National League will never willingly institute the DH. But they should, it is a better game with the DH. And with the NFL taking over as America’s most popular spectator sport maybe now is the time to raise the level of play in the MLB.

Welcome to our second Question of the Week. We were very pleased with the response we got last week and hope to build on that with this weeks edition. Brett Favre recently passed for over his 400th career touchdown. Add that with the over 50,000 career yards of passing and there is no question that he has put together one of the all time great careers at quarterback. The question on the table is how great? Hey readers, how's it going. This is BC: Brian Corley one of BoxScore Banters co-hosts. I just felt like welcoming everyone to the site and I hope that you will keep listening/reading as we get more organized and put up more shows. I thought it would be good to get some dialogue with you the fans so I am going to be posting a Question of the Week once a week for you to write in with some of your own thoughts and opinions.
This weeks question:

In light of the still incomprehendable comeback made by the LA Dodgers this past week (back to back to back to back home runs in the 9th and then a walkl off in the 11th) I decided to theme the question to sports comebacks. What is your favorite/most memorable single game comeback in sports history. Any sport, any level. If you are curious about mine it is game 3 of the Boston Celtics and New Jersey Nets 2002 NBA playoff series. As I am sure you all know my Celtics came from 21 points down at the start of the fourth quarter to complete the biggest ever fourth quarter comeback in NBA Playoff history. They outscored the nets 41-16 in the fourth to win 94-90. E-mail us with your favorite comebacks or post them as a response to this.

More Good News

Well, after what seems to be a successful first show of BoxScore Banter, the good news keeps rolling in. I was just informed by iTunes that we were accepted into the iTunes Music Store Podcast Directory. Those of you who had a tough time subscribing to the show or downloading it will find that it has now become a lot easier. I am changing the side link where it says "Subscribe with iTunes" so that it will now bring you to the show page on iTunes. From there you can choose to download the shows individually or subscribe to it (just click subscribe).

Also, the show is now in the searchable database which means if you search for it on iTunes it will come up. Note: We are BoxScore Banter - there is another one called "The Box Score Banter" that was someone else's show which they stopped doing.

We also should be getting ads up on the site soon...this could potentially help us with making some money so that we can eventually buy a domain and spend some money on a server with more bandwidth and options (all of this is wishful thinking).

Keep those emails coming, we will try to cover 2-3 every show. Until Friday afternoon, just check the Box Score...

The Good...The Bad...

A little bit of good news, a little bit of bad....

Good news:

We have received a few emails already and really like the questions/topic suggestions. For those of you who are checking this site out for the first time, feel free to email us at boxscorebanter@gmail.com with any topics you would like us to discuss, or just to give us some feedback.

2)
We are a go for tomorrow afternoon. We now have an intro song and a solid idea of how the show is going to go. Please give us a few episodes to get all the kinks out. We promise a good listen.

Now for the bad news:

As of 1:35 AM on September 18, there is NO bad news. I uploaded a test show with success. I do not recommend downloading it...I will not post a link, but if you find it and choose to download it, you will just be wasting your time.

The site I am hosting the show on, podbean.com is giving me a difficult time with uploading the show. I sent them an email and hopefully they will respond by showtime tomorrow. I would try to find another host but for the amount of space podbean.com provides for free, it seems like it is the best option once I figure out what is wrong. We will hopefully switch away from podbean once we start to get enough listeners that we actually need to pay for space (that is the ultimate goal ;) ).

Regardless of what happens with podbean.com, we will still do the show, and if we have to, we will find another place to temporarily post it.

Until then, let the word out about the show...new post tomorrow!

We're Live in Five...

Hello to everybody who knows about the upcoming podcast "BoxScore Banter" with BC, Bombs, and the MurrDogg. We are three guys spending our time in Syracuse, NY with nothing better to do than offer our insight on sports to the rest of the globe.

Our first recording will be Monday, September 18th sometime before the MNF game. Odds are we will probably post the show the next day. In the future, we will be attempting to get the show done during the weekend in order to have our monday night picks out to you before the games actually go down.

I will post here pretty frequently, so check back to see what is happening. I will definitely make a post within the next few days; mostlikely including the link to our 1st show. Until then...Just check the Box Score.
